I think they cut the end in order lead into the sequel/Subtle Knife film, and I can even understand WHY they did it (ending on betrayal and despair! In a 'kids' film! O noes!) but it was pretty jarring. It's nice to hear that I am no longer the ONLY person to have adored the books and not subsequently hated the film, though.
