There was a company called 'Melbourne University Student Union Incorporated' (MUSU). It was a union, and as such it was run by elected officers, and elections were run anually. In 2002 (correct me if I've got my dates wrong) there was a legal issue with the elections, and only a group called 'Real Students' could run for office - Darren Ray's mob. So, obviously they won.
They made some sweeping changes, and managed to ensure (mostly by way of very dirty politics) that they stayed in for the subsequent years. It's worth noting that this group of students changed the name of their party and re-branded themselves completely every year they ran in the elections (I kid you not). In 2002 they were 'Real Students' (who used to be called 'Student Alliance' in previous years by the way...) in 2003 it was something else, and then 2004 it was 'Go'.
Melbourne University Student Union Incorporated went into receivership in 2004. It was replaced by "Melbourne University Student Union Limited" - a new organisation that the University itself has executive control over.
And, let it be added, the supposedly-educated students who voted in the elections every year were stupid enough and/or didn't care enough to find out exactly who they were voting for.
