I know bugger all about gardening, so it is probable you are right and I should move the mint. My family when I was growing up gardened thus:

-Go to nursery and buy random stuff that looks nice

-Go home, dig holes where there is space with not much regard for how much light/shade/drainage/whatever there is

-put plants in holes, cover with more dirt, say a quick prayer over plant (Catholic house, though I think the prayer was usually, "God, let it grow!")

-water for two days then neglect

-if plant grows, celebrate! If it doesn't we've forgetten all about it anyway so not matter!

I should probably buy some books or look online...
