I was getting dressed for work this afternoon and had just pulled on my jeans but not done up the fly. Puck reared up on his hind legs and, purring like a maniac, dug his claws into the waistband. He seemed surprised when they came down.

"Oi" said I and picked up the still madly purring bundle, "I'm trying to get ready" I was facing the mirror in our bedroom and thought I saw a pimple on my cheek, so moved closer to the mirror to inspect. I was happily mistaken, no pimple in sight. I looked down at the cat in my arms. Puck had ceased purring and was staring into his own reflection, making a noise somewhere between a growl and a yelp. I put him down "It's you, you dolt" Puck moved forward slowly- so did his reflection. He really did yelp when he saw the "other cat" advancing and scarpered, hiding on the other side of the bed, where he stayed until I'd dressed and was leaving the room.

Clever cat.

That's funny - Heidegger has never responded to a reflection. I've tried a number of times to get him interested, but ...just nothing.

Heh heh heh.

I think Jabba and Lestat are too adult to be disturbed by their reflections. I don't think they've worked it out, I just think they've learned it's not worth it to respond the Arch Nemesis With No Smell.

One day I will get a kitten and will be able to observe this learning process from the beginning... I know with the puppies it was adorable.

I had a similar moment today- you know the little statue of the dog at the corner of Swanston and Collins? There was a real dog, barking and growling at it and resisting every attempt by it's walkers to pull it away. This went on for a good five minutes while Rose and I were paralysed with hysterical laughter.

My rats have never been interested in their reflection, even when I try to get them so. Possibly their very bad eyesight is the culprit here.
