What with the burning and the ouch and the medical treatment yesterday, I forgot to mention that on Sunday [livejournal.com profile] mc_shamo and I went to a caberet performance of Orpheus in the Underworld at 303 High st Northcote and it was fantastic. One man and a guitar for just over an hour, playing each of the characters in turn as well as a very knowing Hermes as narrator. My favourite character was Charon. It was really really good and hopefully will be repeated at some point when I will drag people to go see.

It's a few days late for Rememberance Day, but I just stumbled on a post by my friend, [livejournal.com profile] thecatsamuel in which she transcribed this poem, and I thought I'd share it further with my flist since I think it's really touching and good.

It's written by Patrick Shaw-Stewart, a young classics scholar who died in France in 1917. he wrote it while serving in the Dardanelles.

I saw a man this morning
Who did not wish to die
I ask, and cannot answer,
If otherwise wish I.

Fair broke the day this morning
Against the Dardanelles ;
The breeze blew soft, the morn's cheeks
Were cold as cold sea-shells

But other shells are waiting
Across the Aegean sea,
Shrapnel and high explosive,
Shells and hells for me.

O hell of ships and cities,
Hell of men like me,
Fatal second Helen,
Why must I follow thee ?

Achilles came to Troyland
And I to Chersonese :
He turned from wrath to battle,
And I from three days' peace.

Was it so hard, Achilles,
So very hard to die ?
Thou knewest and I know not-
So much the happier I.

I will go back this morning
From Imbros over the sea ;
Stand in the trench, Achilles,
Flame-capped, and shout for me.

I was going to do a big update about the weekend away (it was amazingly good!) but then I saw this and had to share:

Photobucket

Excellent.

I love my OCD.

It is especially good when one has to write an essay about aspects of Ancient Rome and present this work to a class of Arts Management students, not Classical students. I keep catching myself assuming knowlege I really shouldn't, and I catch myself by reading the OCD entry and thinking "Oh yeah! Not everybody knows that!"

This icon will come in mighty useful during The Bacchae.

Today I worked at Red Stitch. I got to go to a rehearsal for the play that is opening next week and prompt. I got to see a rehearsal ith professional actors and was nicely reassured by how much it reminded me of Omnirop rehearsals.

I then went to uni where after some too-ing and fro-ing and organising with UHT I finally booked audition rooms for the Bacchae.

After that I met up with Helen and [livejournal.com profile] jpom40 and had coffee, they then took me to the Classics library for the Shelving Party!

The classics library has got a whole load of new books and need to catalogue them as well as some of the old ones, so I spent a few hours happily playing with books and feeling nostalgic.

Then Helen and I went to the pub, then to my house for dinner.

Fun, fun, fun full day of goodness.

Especially since the cat came back (naughty thing went AWOL for over 24 hours and scared the shit out of [livejournal.com profile] _bounce_ and I).

Yay!

Now there is scotch and [livejournal.com profile] mc_shamo

Happy, fulfilled feeling Chris.
