Puck seems to be doing ok. We've still got him separated from Loki when were not home, just in case. Loki went for Puck's throat last night, I think it was in play, but still, not pleasant for Puck. Puck is still a bit freaked by this whole new-place, new-people, new-cat thing.
Loki, on the other hand, thinks we've got him a wonderful new toy that makes noise and moves of it's own accord and can chase him as well as the other way round, and spent a good hour this morning (from 4am-5am, grr!) trying to get the study door open by throwing himself at it and clawing underneath it. He can't understand why we'd put his toy in a room he can't get into.

I'm tired.

While our tale is very different, we had a similar experience. When we'd just driven back from Adelaide with a brand new Jabba, we went upstairs and put him straight in my study and closed the door.

Within seconds both Jabba and Lestat were sniffing and pawing at their respective sides of the door, determined to find out who was on the other side. When they did meet, it was with some sort of recognition; Jabba went to smooch Lestat straight away, so a good sign. Apparently Jabba got quite stressed when Lestat left Adelaide to come and live with Michael, so he must have been pleased to see him (strange as that must be for cats - it's the familiar in a strange environment, I suppose).

Lestat wasn't quite so pleased. He sulked for days.

Awww. I'm glad he's starting to settle in. It's making me think that Jack might be getting lonely. But not lonely enough to get a second cat.

Loki was very obviously bored during the day when we weren't around, and was doing destructive things to get attention when we were, which made us think another cat might be a good idea. If Jack isn't really obviously bored he's probably fine (Loki would jump up as soon as one of us got home and follow us mewing, and usually he wouldn't be hungry, just lonely) I think Loki needed to be alone for a while to learn to be tame around humans, but he knows that now, so having a playmate makes sense.

Besides, this means it's two cats, two people. I doubt I'd be able to afford to look after both of them on my own, and I figure you'd be in a similar financial position to me.

I'd be able to look after two until something went wrong. ;) I think Jack is less bored because he's outside during the day and in at night. It keeps him occupied. Besides, Scott is there 24/7, which keeps him company, too.

Two cats of a similar age tend to get along a lot quicker then those with large age gaps. We introduced Ned to Olive when he was about 4 and they got a long great. Then Prudence came along when he was about 8-9 and he did not like her one bit. They've gotten used to each other (she grew up and isn't kitten playful anymore).

The chasing is normal. They'll both get exercise and hopefully it will be enough to stop them from becoming fat cats.

You will probably come home one night and find them curled up together.

I wouldn't stress too much - generqally boy cats get on better with new cats than girl ones do.

When we got Toby, Cedric was cautious and watched him from a distance for a little while before warming up to him; the two curl up to each other now. Ruri is still very ambivalent towards him - she actively hissed and growled at him when Toby came near, and she still avoids him now.

Loki's probably just playing with the new cat, but keep an eye on them all the same.

I'm sure they'll settle - we got a second cat as company for Ginnie (both, sadly now deceased) and they were very sniffy at first and then made friends and were inseperable. They were both neutered females - don't know if that makes a difference?
Having new cats is great - good luck!

Thanks!

I think for the moment separating them while we're not home is still the way to go. They're both big boys and I wouldn't want them doing serious damage to each other when we can't hear what's going on. :-)

I hope they end up at the inseperable stage!
