Back on St Patrick's day, or the day of the Left of Crazy gig at the Old Bar (however you best remember it) I woke up feeling breathless and called in sick to work. I then went in the study and checked my emails. [livejournal.com profile] mc_shamo came inot the study, chatted with me for a bit, then said something about not likeing keeping secrets from me and slipped a ring sizer on my finger. I was somewhat speechless, which as many people know if a very uncommon occurence for me. He then told me that he was getting a ring made for me with a diamond and rubies and rose gold, but it would take some time. We decided to keep it quiet until I had the ring. I'm not very good at keeping happy secrets :-/ That day became one of the happiest I've ever experienced.

Last Friday we went out with my parents to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. Before we left I mentioned that I thought it would be nice to tell my parents we were engaged that night. I then found out that Seamus had thought I'd like to do that and though the real engagement ring was (and is) still a few months away the lovely boy had ordered an "interem ring" but unfortunately it had not yet arrived! I thought this was incredibly sweet, and told Seamus the story of my mother's engagement ring (she can't wear it- she's allergic!) and we decided ring or no ring to tell Mum and Dad that night.

My parents were ecstatic, Seamus' Mum was pleased, his sister is excited (and will be doing the photos on the day as a wedding present!) my brother texted half of Werribee before I could stop him by saying that I hadn't told MY friends yet and my cousin cried on the phone. I was reminded of Jane Bennet actually, in the way I felt. The exact line escapes me at the moment, something like "To know what I have to impart will bring such happiness! How can I bear it?" And my parents are pretty much happy for us to do things our way, though as I had predicted to seamus they instantly veto-ed my idea of wearing my docs on my wedding day. :-)

So, later this week you shall probably see me sporting a very pretty diamond ring, and some time later in the year I shall probably very excitedly post about the real ring arriving ;-) I did try to upload the design, but it's not working on the work computer, I may put it up some time tomorrow. It is absolutley gorgeus, it is being hand made, and the jewels were all hand cut over a century ago. It's also being made in the most environmentally friendly way possible. :-D

Whee!

Very happy.

Bah, how can they veto wedding docs?

It all sounds wonderful.

When I was a teenager my mother was incredibly liberal when it came to clothes. She let me leave the house in micro mini skirts, midriff tops that just reached the bottom of my bra (though she always cautioned my kidneys would get cold) tye-dyed oddities, knee-high boots and full gothic makeup (though usually not all of these at once!).

The one thing we fought about was my liking for wearing docs with long skirts. She hated it, absolutley hated it! I still don't really get why, but she felt it looked just awful and while she put up with it if I was going out with friends or around the house (though she'd still shudder) she would put her foot down if we were going anywhere even vaguely posh (including the RSL or Italian Social Club) and insist on "nice shoes", so I had a pair of black flats that were only worn when I lost the argument.

Like i said, I still don't get it, but if that is her only stipulation then hey, I can forgo my docs for one day to make her happy.

Show her my wedding photos :D

Besides, you wear nice shoes well -- I wobble all over the place in heels, but you're good at heels. I'm sure you'll find something nice.

P.S. I bet that ends up not being her only stipulation, but I hope she's as easygoing as my mum was.

There is absolutely no way I'm wearing heels, not all day anyway! :-)

I will need to investigate shoes that are confortable and able to be stood on all day but still look ok incase anyone happens to glimpse them beneath my skirt.

My mum has a similar thing about any boots and skirts. Maybe it's that generation.

Mmmh... you would have rather sucked at using the ring sizer if it were.

And it would probably be prohibitively expensive.....

Or Chris has a massive mutant hand with salami-sized fingers that she's been hiding from us all these years.

Wow, that's perrty! Did you come up with it by yourself or were you inspired by something/choose from a selection? Also, what are the smaller red dots.

It was based on what was available, and what we told the jeweller. He came up with several options, and this was the one that worked! Chris was actually involved in creating it.....

The dots are where the 'pins' that hold the jewels in place will be. It makes sense when you see a profile picture of the ring....

As Chris just pointed out, the jewels were based on what was available, the design is based on conversations etc...

www.utopiancreations.com.au - good mob! (When I say 'mob' - I mean a mob of 1 guy called Ben, who is a business minded hippy...).

I think proposing with a rig sizer is an awesome idea. It means you can do the whole romantic slipping the engagement ring on the finger thing with a ring that actually fits!

Ooh! Pretty pretty ring that looks almost Möbius-strip like!!

Re: Docs - why not? It's your wedding. I would not recommend wearing silly shoes that you're not going to be comfortable in, because you'll be wearing them for hours. My shoes were relatively sensible, and I still had to take them off in the carpark after we exited the venue because my feet were throbbing.

I recommend pretty flats, you can wear them all day and at least they're in fashion these days so they're easy to get. I got mine at DFO for under 50 bucks.
