We have a new Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.

I wonder what happens now?

What happens now is that we hope that she's clever and lucky enough to be able to beat The Mad Abbott at the next election.

Oh, and be able to sell the mining tax to the Dimwits of Australia more effectively than KRudd. Not to mention formulate some decent policy in regards to climate change, even if it means resuscitating the ETS.

We can hope.

And has the good sense to fire 'doesn't deserve to be a senator' Conroy out an airlock and bring in someone who knows what they're doing?

Conroy's a faction heavy, so she's unlikely to be able to ditch him. However, he wasn't in on getting her into power, so she owes him jack and might be able to move him to somewhere where he'll do less damage.

Also the same faction. He also hasn't been an underperformer, so there's no reason to dump him.

In other words, why create discord?

Abbott was never going to get elected. The question that the Government faced was how much control over the Senate did they want. Both parties were bleeding votes to 'third parties'. A lot of Rudd's failures were due to an inability to control the Senate: a repeat performance of this would be disastrous at the end of the second term.

Basically, if you know that you're not going to get elected, you can promise whatever the damn hell you like. In that position, your goal isn't to win the election: it's to make the conditions less favourable for the incumbent at the next election. It's why Labor spent so long in the wilderness: they were incapable of rattling the Coalition in the Senate. As such, they were always one election behind the pace.

Expect a reshuffle of the front bench. Rudd will likely end up with a portfolio -- though it's difficult at this stage to know exactly what that portfolio will be.

We just had Budget Estimates, so there won't be any radical changes in policy. The next sitting date is in August, so the Gillard Ministry has a month to work out its image and the pitch of its debate.
